Puget Sound native, Jonathan Campbell is an active saxophonist, composer, and educator, and currently serves as the Director of Jazz Studies and Assistant Professor of Saxophone at University of Minnesota, Morris. His high level of artistry, unique improvisation/composition voice, and commitment to advocacy for jazz research have led him to become widely recognized in both the professional and academic realms of music.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities and performing, Jonathan is a sought after guest clinician/educator. Since 2013 he has been invited as a performer/clinician in ten different states including the 2017 North American Saxophone Alliance regional conference in Brookings, SD, the 2016 Minnesota Music Educator's state conference in Minneapolis, MN, the 2015 Utah Music Educator's state conference in St. George, UT, and the 2014 Jazz Education Network national conference in Dallas, TX.
With nearly twenty years of performance experience in a variety of genres Jonathan has received numerous accolades for jazz performance including two Down Beat awards and was a previous winner of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival Saxophone Competition. In 2017 he was the recipient of a Minnesota Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant which he used to collaborate with iconic jazz trumpet Clay Jenkins on an album of his original compositions. In addition to performance, Jonathan has been recognized for his unique approach to jazz composition and was the 2015 recipient of the Utah Arts Festival Jazz Commission.
Jonathan received a Doctoral of Arts Degree in Jazz Studies from University of Northern Colorado, and his dissertation is titled “Beyond Harmony: Incorporating Non-Harmonic Elements of Jazz Improvisation through Curriculum and Pedagogy.” He also holds a Master of Music degree in composition and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Washington University.
